On Wednesday, March 9th, 2016, I drove to the Luis Muñoz Marin Airport in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico to await the arrival of 4 time Women’s Boxing Champion Amanda “Real Deal” Serrano. Serrano was traveling to Puerto Rico to be officially presented, by the World Boxing Organization(WBO), with the 126 lb. title she just captured by devastating knockout in the first round this past February.
I then mentioned to Amanda, “with Women’s Boxing on the rise…you’ve got Blanca Gutierrez and her Beautiful Brawlers movement on the west coast, Martha Salazar, Melissa McMorrow…in the past Laila Ali, Christy Martin and the strides that you and Cindy are making right now, and Sue T Fox behind the scenes…how long do you think it’s going to be before we see mainstream Women’s Boxing on HBO and Showtime?” Amanda answered, “I believe it’s going to happen this year. 2016 is going to be the year for Female Boxing. I just signed with Lou DiBella, the biggest Promoter out of New York…and he’s had some talks about us fighting on Showtime, HBO…so fingers crossed. With a performance like my last one, I think that will push him more into putting female fighters on TV….and once Someone like me goes on TV, I think they’re going to want more!”
