March 3, 2016 – I got the opportunity to interview Javier before the activities started. I asked Javier what we can expect from this upcoming Noche de Campeones card on March 19th. Javier responded, “I’m real happy. This is a great event. 10 Puerto Rican prospects in big tests. The 3 principal bouts are for regional titles and we have Bomba Gonzalez facing Joebert Alvarez. Ranked worldwide as one of the most dangerous in the 112 lb. division…who in his last fight lost a very tough fight to the actual champion Estrada (Juan Francisco Estrada-current WBA and WBO Flyweight Champion). It’s going to be a great test for Bomba because whoever wins this fight, we are sure will fight for the World title this year. To be able to put together this fight here in Puerto Rico is real important. Joebert Alvarez from the Nonito Donaire group, to come from the Philippines to Puerto Rico…it is an honor to present this here and thanks to DIRECTV, we are having this great event in the municipality of Guaynabo.”
I then asked Javier, “Not to change the subject but what can we expect with the Jose Sniper Pedraza situation.” Javier answered, “Pedraza (the IBF World Super Featherweight Champion 21-0 with 12 KOs) is a boxer who’s at the level where he has to face the mandatory opponent. There are a lot of things behind this negotiation. For example, the organization tells you to fight the mandatory or unfortunately you have to vacate the title. Going against the number one ranked Britain (Stephen Smith 23-1 with 13 KOs). The IBF opens the negotiations, gives 90 days for both parties to be in agreement on purse and location as the IBF is the sanctioning body. The negotiations haven’t been easy because both sides ask for certain requirements. The requirements have to be formalized by where the fight will take place, the organization, and TV—who will be broadcasting the event. The fight has to be marketed, it’s an expensive fight because when you are at Pedraza’s level as World Champion, the purses aren’t five or ten thousand. It’s a fight of a lot of money and all parts need to be coordinated, When we analyzed this fight and when are at the final point where both parties are close to meeting all the requirements, the organization comes in with the deadline. If everything isn’t signed then the fight goes to purse bid. It would be a shame for it to go to a purse bud for a lot of reasons. First there’s the risk of a lot less money. Second because if it goes to another bidder, that promoter has another 90 days to put on the event. We already have a date in April (a lot of interest has been mentioned on having Pedraza fight on the April 16th upcoming Top Rank card in Puerto Rico scheduled to feature Felix Verdejo) and that’s a month and a half. This could push the fight back another 3 months. All of these things could happen. They are elements in the business of boxing. We’ve tried to extend to the maximum that we can but if there isn’t an agreement…it happens to all promoters with their principal champions. If the requirements aren’t met or the TV doesn’t want to pay what they ask, it goes to a purse bid. So you have to do exactly what the purse bid states or the title is removed. Those are the risks. They are risks that I hope both fighters avoid and come to an agreement. The Britain has already signed and we’re waiting on Pedraza’s group so everything can be solved and we can have the fight in April.” I thanked Javier and wish him much success with his card March 19th.
Noche de Campeones is going to be an exciting night of boxing action at the Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales in Guaynabo Puerto Rico shown exclusively on DIRECTV. Tickets can be purchased at http://PRTicket.com or by calling (787) 303-0334. Looking forward to covering this event and seeing what the future holds for these prospects.
