By Robert Quijano
I caught up with undefeated Andy “El Tiburon” Vences (9-0 with 5 KO's) before he was scheduled for sparring at Dreamland Boxing Club (2047 Woodard Road, San Jose Ca. 95124). I’ve covered several of Andy’s fights and prior to his last two fights, Andy showcased his left hand. Andy started with a new trainer (Gabe Flores) and has won his last two fights in July and August of this year by TKOs.
I mentioned to Andy that after his last fight on August 22nd, his opponent Cesar Martinez was claiming the fight was stopped too early and asked Andy if he would fight Cesar again. Andy answered, “Honestly I wouldn’t fight Cesar again. He didn’t have much to bring to me that a lot of people were saying he was going to bring to me. He’s a basic fighter, just comes forward, a lot of left hooks and if that fight wasn’t stopped early, I’m sure I would have knocked him out. He was pretty much tired. I mean they actually did him a favor by stopping that fight (I interjected “You did drop him in the 1st round”). I did drop him in the 1st round but I don’t take anything away from him. He’s tough, came forward, came to win, and he came to fight but the referee stopped the fight.”
