By Robert Quijano
Yesterday afternoon I met with Moises “El Halcon (The Hawk)” Benitez at Dreamland Boxing Club (2047 Woodard Road, San Jose California 95124). Benitez is scheduled for his second professional fight on October 11th 2014 at the Red Lion Woodlake Hotel in Sacramento California. Square Vision Entertainment, The United Combat Association, and Donaire Sr. Boxing and Fitness present “The Capitol City Explosion-The Battle of the Badges.” An exciting night of amateur and professional boxing with proceeds going to “The Race to Erase MS.” I had previously interviewed Moises before his first professional fight and covered the event on August 2nd of this year. It was an action packed fight that thrilled those in attendance.
Even though Moises knows a little English, he feels more comfortable speaking in Spanish (as seen in the video). This is the translation of our conversation. I began by telling Moises that his first fight with Percy Peterson was a very tough one where at times it seemed it was all offensive without defense by either fighter. I asked Moises what he has been working on right now in the gym to resolve this. Moises advised that he always concentrates on defense and stated, “What happened was that it was my first fight and I became really anxious. I lost control in the 1st round. After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round I started to use my defense more but I went out of control in the 1st round. I interjected that the fight was a “Give and take between the both of them.”
I mentioned to Moises that his next fight is October 11th, “The Capitol City Explosion-Battle of the Badges” in Sacramento. I asked Moises what he knew of his opponent Devonte Donaldson. Moises responded, “He’s a good fighter so I can’t say I’m going to win, I’m going to lose, or I’m going to be better. I know he wants to box and not be aggressive so I’m going to try and start intelligently, not get desperate and try to knock him out in the first round like I did my first fight.
