One-on-One with Wilkins "The Hispanic Hurricane" Santiago.
Interview by Robert Quijano (June 28, 2014)
Today I had the opportunity to meet and interview highly touted Puerto Rican Boxing prospect Wilkins "The Hispanic Hurricane" Santiago at the Berryessa Flea Market in San Jose, California during a break of the local Salsa band Latin Heat performing. Wilkins is fighting August 2nd on a card promoted by Squarevision Entertainment in association with United Combat Association presenting "A Night of Glory: The Battle of the Golden State" at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California. Wilkins (10-0-1 with 1 KO) is 34 years old and recently relocated to San Jose, California from his hometown in Lorain Ohio. Wilkins told me that he relocated to California because the West Coast is where boxing is happening and that he is now training with Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward's trainer, Virgil Hunter. Wilkins was very humble and repeatedly thanking all of his fans and support team. I asked Wilkins if he cared to elaborate on his past. It's a very deep story and fans should know, Wilkins started boxing at the age of 9. He was off to a promising career and got caught up in the street life. Wilkins stated that he was young, tried to "take the fast lane" and ended up being incarcerated for five years on a drug charge. Wilkins served his debt to society. Wilkins was adamant that he has a new purpose, a renewed love for boxing, a rebirth in his commitment with the hopes of one day being a World Champion. This was a very humble and grateful young man with a mission "trying to improve" always and considering "Everything a blessing." A man looking to redeem himself.
