http://ThePugilistReport.com "It's For the Kids" - Grand Opening of the Guerrero Boxing Gym!
Interview by Robert Quijano (April 26, 2014)
Today I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the Guerrero Boxing Gym in Galt California, owned and operated by Russ Guerrero (brother to trainer Ruben "Mad Dog" Guerrero and uncle to former World Champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero). Russ' mission statement throughout the day was "It's all for the kids." Russ explained that he wanted to make sure the kids had a place to go after school so they would stay out of trouble and be able to follow their dreams.
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO's) arrived and immediately began signing gloves, ring articles, and taking pictures with the fans. The grand opening event was due to start at noon but Robert arrived at 11:20am and began greeting all of his fans. Once the crowd slowed down and began to watch the amateur sparring bouts, Robert gave me time for a quick interview. Robert said that it was very important for him to be present today and help his uncle with the grand opening. Robert continued that Russ has been with him supporting him since the very beginning and that it is also important to give back to the kids and the fans.
Robert advised that there is the possibility that he will be fighting on June 21st against Japanese opponent Yoshihiro Kamegai, in Carson City, California but the bout has yet to be finalized. I asked Robert if he was looking at any particular names in the welterweight division and he replied "I'm looking at all names." Robert also stated that he wants to get back to the top level and fight Floyd Mayweather again. When I asked Robert if he had any predictions on tonight's Keith Thurman vs Julio Diaz match, Robert did not pick a winner but exclaimed it would be an action packed match. I applauded Robert for the sacrifice and support that he showed his wife while she conquered cancer and wished him luck in the future. Robert returned to signing autographs and posing for pictures with the fans, as the gym continued to fill. The amateur sparring matches with promising prospects were made up of teams from Sacramento, Stockton, Turlock, and other areas of California. Sacramento favorite Guy Robb was also in attendance showing his support for the opening and also advised that he may be returning to the ring this coming June. The event was a successful one with a large turnout, barbequed burgers/hot dogs provided by the gym, and a message to the kids that they can achieve their dreams just like Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero did. Galt now has the location and people like Russ to help get them there. Keep Jabbing!
